INTRODUCTION

United Infrared, Inc. (UI) is the largest network of certified thermographers in the world and a full-service infrared training organization, with experts in many applications of infrared thermography (IRt). UI is now offering a training program catering to home inspectors who are interested in adding infrared thermography to their existing business or developing a career in this emerging new field. They will be offering our 4-hour course at the COA Atlantic City event April, 2012 with focus on the large residential market. United Infrared’s training programs are highly respected so you can be assured your group will receive high quality training from a well-known and respected firm. We have always emphasized hands-on training and these classes will be no different. The students will be required to show competence by passing a final exam and passing various hands-on exercises, before being awarded a Certification of Completion. Knowing how to operate the imager, taking good imagery, understanding how to read the imagery and making a report will be covered in these courses.

WHY UI?

We have credibility in the infrared world. United Infrared is currently the largest infrared servicing network in the world. UI’s technical teaching staff is committed to high quality training and is made up of seasoned professionals in each area of infrared thermography, some being practicing thermographers for over 25 years. The opportunities with thermal imaging are endless. You can utilize our training to give your members an unbiased, well-prepared, customized learning experience that will cut the learning curve to infrared thermography.

United Infrared is a complete solutions-based business and until now we have focused on infrared contractors. We do understand the demands of industry and realize that there is an open market for helping people get into the IR business from a related business. Our HomeInspectIR™ program is not meant to be exhaustive, but instead a great introduction for someone who is interested in this field or interested in adding infrared to their existing business. We will help them a) under-stand the basics, b) learn some things about the technology and its uses that they did not know, c) test out the different imagers in an unbiased setting, and d) ask questions from true experts in the field of thermography. This allows them to make informed decisions instead of jumping into something they do not understand.

You can apply the complete class fee toward the purchase of Certified Infrared Thermographer training and/or any of UI’s training classes or products like an infrared camera. *contact our office for more information.

WHY NOW & WHY HOME INSPECTORS?

The home inspection business has been very adversely affected by the downturn in the economy. While home inspections were declining, infrared inspections were increasing at an exponential rate. Home inspectors already have a great understanding of building construction and infrared thermography is largely about buildings, so home inspectors are the perfect candidates for becoming infrared thermographers of buildings.

Simultaneously, the thermal imaging industry is experiencing tremendous growth. Because of lower price detectors that operate at ambient temperatures and manufacturing economies of scale, thousands of infrared cameras are being produced monthly, creating commodity pricing. Just a few years ago, the average price of an infrared camera for building surveying was $25,000. Today, starter cameras can be purchased for a few thousand. It has been stated many times that every home inspector will soon have one of these tools. Today’s top-rated home inspection television programs are promoting it, which means the consumers are beginning to ask for thermographic surveys. The market exists and is growing, but few know how to do the work properly. That is where United Infrared can help you expand your business.

UI’s Vice-President and The HomeInspectIR™ Chief Instructor, Peter Hopkins is a Level III Certified Infrared Thermographer and knows the home inspection business since he has been one since 1996, having personally performed over 7000 property inspections. This true understanding of the mindset and experience of a home inspector allows him to relate to their business. “Home Inspectors are the perfect candidate for thermography because they already understand construction. However there are restraints of the profession which limit what they actually say or could say on an inspection. Having a thermal imager allows them to communicate with assurance, knowing where the problem is rather than guessing. Infrared will allow them to capture additional revenue.” states Mr. Hopkins.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

For the 4-hours class there are no prerequisite requirements. Laptops, if used, will need to have a SD card reader or they will need to bring an adapter to read memory card images. For those who do not own an infrared imager, we will have a limited amount of demo imagers available.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The 4-hour course includes classroom and hands-on training with a limited number of demo cameras available for those that do not have equipment. The class is broken down into an introduction and four application segments. The students hear about the use of IR for that application, and then use the cameras to look at test set-ups for each application. The four segments are:

Insulation Inspection is an introduction to science of reviewing residential structures for insulation deficiencies and air leakage, which will include review of sample projects. An insulated wall demonstration is set up for students to identify missing insulation and air leakage.

HVAC Inspection is designed to help students understand how cold room/warm room conditions can happen in a home and how they can identify and rectify these conditions with HVAC controls. Discussion will be made on evaluating air conditioning and heating equipment and students will evaluate a demonstration area for temperature variances and what that means.

Moisture Inspection is about what we see with an infrared camera when we look at the walls, floors and ceilings of a home, how to identify moisture using thermography and how to confirm moisture using a moisture meter. A sample lab will be set up for students to find wet spots and cool but dry spots that look like wet spots.

Electrical Inspection discusses the basic physics of infrared testing of electrical systems which will include review of sample electrical fault reports. Electrical demonstration panels are used to teach the reason for connection problems and what they look like, along with overloaded circuitry, and receptacle problems.

Introduction to IR Basics (Classroom Instruction)

  1. Insulation Inspections
    1.1. Classroom Instruction
1.2. Hands-on Training with Demo Insulated Wall: Each student will image the wall, take an image and decide where insulation is missing and other deficiencies in the wall.
  2. HVAC Inspections
    2.1. Classroom Instruction
2.2. Hands-on Training on Hotel HVAC: Each student will image HVAC System in the hotel and show multiple temperatures. They will identify return vs. supply and determine possible problem areas.

  3. Moisture Inspections
    3.1. Classroom Instruction
3.2. Hands-on Training on Moisture Inspections: Each student will image the room for moisture areas that have been spread throughout the classroom.
  4. Electrical Inspections
    4.1. Classroom Instruction
4.2. Hands-on Training with Demo Electrical Panels: Each student will image the panels, disconnects and receptacles and decide if any fault reports need to be created.
Report writing – The instructor will create reports for each of the hands-on demos based on the images that the students took during class.
